SQL Server 2016 is Out of Mainstream Support

SQL Server 2016 is out of Mainstream support today. Are you running an IT department where SQL Server supports your critical applications? Have you just upgraded your SQL Servers to the latest or greatest version?

Maybe you decided that you’d go for “one version back” because you don’t need to be on the latest version.

Maybe you upgrade your old SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008R2 instances to SQL Server 2017 or SQL Server 2019, even SQL Server 2016. You’re about to breathe a sigh of relief…

SQL Server 2016 is Out of Mainstream Support

Then I tell you that SQL Server 2016 goes out of Main Stream support today, Tuesday 13th July 2021. So it’s been five years since SQL Server 2016 was released.

You and I both know you’re not got going to be too bothered and probably not do much about it. But perhaps you should.

Upgrades and migrations can take some time and planning, they are not always delivered quickly, and there are many new features in later versions that can be helping drive a data culture at your organisation.

What does that mean for me?

What does outside of mainstream support mean? Well, in short, you’ll stop getting service packs and cumulative updates. No more bug fixes etc. You will still get security updates and you can stay on extended support until 2026

If you have recently moved to SQL Server 2017, don’t get too excited either October 2022 will be here before you know it, and that too will then be out of mainstream support, and it’ll be five years of security updates.

You’ll probably do nothing (At least not today)

So with SQL Server 2016 going out of support, do you need to be concerned. My clients and others I have spoken to are OK. They have a cloud roadmap and are hopeful of moving from SQL Server 2016 to Azure before July 2026. So we’re helping them with that. 

If you don’t have a plan, or you don’t want to move to the cloud, or if you’re still on old versions of SQL Server – 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2014. Don’t fret. You’re not on your own. But, perhaps now is the time to do something about that so you can make future proof your data platform and future proof your business.
