Build a Business: Pixar Pitches and Power BI
What follow are my Pixar Pitches for my Power BI training
Do they resonate with you?
I read/listened to Daniel Pinks’ book “To sell is human” last year. It is well worth reading if you run a business or need to “move people” along a path.
In the book, Pink talks about “Pixar Pitches” as a selling technique. You shape your pitch in the form of a Pixar story. Granted, the author does better explaining this than I do. However, shaping it into a story is intended to hold people’s attention and allows people to connect with your message.
With a Power BI course running at the end of the month, I thought I’d write a post with a few Pixar pitches aimed at different potential customers for the course.
DBA Diana and Power BI
Once upon a time, a DBA called Diana looked after the business’s data warehouse.
Every day the DBA would come into work, look after the SQL Servers, the ETL Processes, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS Cubes and keep them running and the business happy with their reports on their data.
One day the business decided to do “digital transformation”, and a cloud called Azure came along. The cloud platform introduced some tremendous new technical features that you can use in other people’s data centres. Because of that, some of the old tools used in business intelligence became dated, and lots of new innovations went into the Cloud Data Centers first.
Because of that, many businesses decided to use the technology in the cloud data centre. Lots of companies moved all their data to the cloud. The move to the cloud gave the DBA a problem. The DBA needed training, so they decided to teach themselves the new technology using online resources and YouTube Videos.
Finally, the IT Manager found a Buy One Get One Free Offer on Microsoft’s course PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst that we are running on the 28th – 30th March. Two seats for £1250 plus VAT
Finance Frank and Power BI
Once upon a time, there was a finance analyst called frank.
Every day Frank would build reports in excel, Slice and dice the data and save the file to his share so his colleagues could also view the efforts of his work.
One day Frank’s colleague Fred opened the excel file, made a load of changes by mistake and saved it over the top of the existing file. This made Frank Mad.
Because of that, Fred, Frank, and Ian, the IT Director, had a meeting to discuss how they could do analytics better. Ian had recently been to a large IT conference and seen Power BI full flow.
Because of that, the team decided to use Power BI as the Analytics tool for the finance team. This added additional challenges as the team needed to “skilled up in Power BI”
Finally Frank found a Buy one seat get one free on some awesome Power BI Training being put on by gethynellis.com and bought both Frank and Fred a seat on the course to get them up to speed. Both Frank and Fred are really looking forward to the training between 28th and 30th March
CTO Cheryl and Power BI
Once upon a time, there was CTO named Cheryl. Night and day, Cheryl thought about how technology could drive her business forward. She wanted to leave her mark on the company in her c-suite role.
One day, after attending a business conference, she decided that using data and technology to drive the business was the way forward. The business needed a digital transformation.
Because of that light bulb decision to do digital transformation, she spoke with her CEO, Claire. Claire suggested she develop a strategy of building a data culture, understanding that this change would mean changes for staff that would need managing. She also needed to make sure that the initiative got the buy from key stakeholders around the business.
Because of this, she highlighted to her peers on the C-Suite the great benefits of data analytics and what it could do for the business. She also said she knew a great training provider who could provide training to all staff in Power BI and even better she bought the places with a buy one get one free offer.
Finally, everyone was bought into the change, key staff had been trained, the data culture started to flourish, data was delivering more and more value, and the organisation went from strength to strength.
