Education Data

As part of my Power BI classes, I like to demonstrate how publicly available datasets can be used to showcase Power BI’s capabilities. One such example is this education report, which brings together Ofsted data in a format that is easy to explore and interact with.

When I first moved to Wolverhampton, I spent many evenings attending school open days and reading Ofsted reports to help decide where to send my children. Some say Ofsted reports are like the TripAdvisor for schools — if the rating is ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, that’s good enough for many. I don’t believe selecting a school is quite that simple — but having easy access to school performance data all in one place certainly helped me, and I hope it helps you too.

All the data presented in this report is publicly available from Ofsted. I’ve simply modelled, shaped, and visualised it using Power BI to make it easier for you to explore.

⚠️ Disclaimer: We take no responsibility for the accuracy of the underlying data — it is provided “as is” and may be subject to change by Ofsted.

Understanding the Ratings

As of September 2024, Ofsted no longer provides an overall judgment or grade for schools. Instead, each school is evaluated across the following five categories:

  • Effectiveness of leadership and management
  • Quality of education
  • Behaviour and attitudes
  • Personal development
  • Early years provision (where applicable)

Each area is graded on a 1–4 scale:

Grade Description
1 Outstanding
2 Good
3 Requires Improvement
4 Inadequate

To support comparison across schools, I’ve added a calculated column called the GRE Rating, which shows the average of the available scores across the five areas above. This is not an official Ofsted rating and is provided only as a guide. Here’s how to interpret it:

  • GRE Rating ≈ 1 → School is likely performing at an Outstanding level across multiple areas
  • GRE Rating ≈ 2 → School is performing at a consistently Good level
  • GRE Rating > 2 → There may be areas requiring improvement

You’ll find the GRE Rating on each school’s detail page within the report.
